Facing Divorce?- Consider a CDFA

Q: What is a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst® (CDFA) ?
A: A member of the Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts® who specializes in the financial issues surrounding divorce.

The role of the CDFA is to help both client and lawyer understand how the financial decisions made today will impact the client’s financial future.

A CDFA is someone who comes from a financial planning, accounting or legal background and goes through an intensive training program to become skilled in analyzing and providing expertise related to the financial issues of divorce.

Q: Why should you contact a CDFA® before divorcing?
A: It could save you time and lead to a better outcome.

From start to finish, the typical divorce takes about a year. Why so long? Money issues. It may take weeks or months for both spouses to fully know their financial potential, where they each stand moneywise and what they might want to do next on behalf of their financial well-being.

A CDFA can give you a clear picture of where you are financially and clarify the jargon of wealth management, retirement planning and investing so you can understand the decisions you face, as well as consider your options with confidence.
An “equal split” of assets in a divorce is not necessarily equitable. Out of a desire for simplicity, some couples want to divide everything 50/50 and move on. However, that may invite a problem. While the assets may be “equally” divided, the divorcing spouses may not have equal potential to maintain their standard of living in the future.
Divorcing couples can turn to a CDFA if they choose to pursue a truly fair, equitable financial outcome.
