Stop and Smell The Roses!

I’m sure you have heard the expression, “stop and smell the roses” but do you do it? This crazy world we live in is nothing but a rat race we run. We run it everyday in the hopes that one day we will make it to the finish line first; schedules for work, kids after school activities, homework, social obligations, the list seems to never end. When do we really stop and just take the time to look at the world?

I always notice the different smells of each season. I know it sounds crazy, but each season does have it’s own distinct smells and sounds. Summer is about bright orange/pink sunrises that I can see rising outside my window. The air is heavy with warmth, that is inhaled the minute you open the door in the morning. It’s the sounds of the insects chiming in unison as they wake you up each day. And the hot summer city nights, with quiet, uncrowded streets to walk down.

Fall has a brisk stride to it’s season. The air is crisp and the leaves take on their own identity; each one unique with varying shades of color. Fall smells like the beginning of a new harvest; squash, pumpkins and warm apple pies. A fresh, invigorating aroma that arouses the senses. Suddenly, you have the urge to cook and bake. You want to fill the tummies of your loved ones with warming nourishment.

Winter is frigid but in a calming, peaceful way. The mornings are dark and muted with silence. The cold air immediately wakes you up with a frosty kiss. I especially enjoy the silence of snow, everything stops. You could stand in the middle of the street and not hear a sound. It’s amazing to think that frozen flakes no bigger than a finger, could cause everyone to enjoy a blissful lull. You find yourself lifting the shades, and watching the snow fall, as you enjoy a nice glass of wine. You snuggle on the couch with a warm blanket, as you watch the dancing flames of fire in your fireplace.

Spring has more of a fresh scent to it. The flowers are in bloom perfuming the air with endless fragrance. It’s a season of pastels- buttercup yellow, sky blue and cotton candy pink. Thoughts of Easter bonnets and white gloves start to enter into your mind. You want to open the windows and fill the house with the floral bouquet of air. I think this is why everyone gets the “spring cleaning” itch.

Each season is different and has it’s own special traits that make it so memorable. It’s not just about the seasons though, it’s about life. Life and it’s adventures should be treasured. You have to take each experience and cherish it. Good, bad or indifferent, they help round our world and shape who we are; so don’t just coast through. Use all of your senses each and every day to look, listen and discover the world around you. If you really want to get the true essence of life, you have to stop and smell the roses.
