ALCOHOL, DRUGS AND SPIN CLASS

Going through a divorce is probably the most stressful thing you have ever been through. I remember, the longer the proceedings dragged out the more stressed I became. However, the longer it went on, the stronger I got, but not without the help of chocolate…my drug of choice.

Now that the divorce is over, or if you’re still fighting the battle, you might be battling depression as well. When we get depressed we reach for anything sugary – chocolate, soda, anything sweet or starchy. The sugar give you an instant energy lift, but the effect is only temporary and they you soon crave more sugar. These comfort foods are full of calories and do not give you the proper nourishment you need, especially in these difficult times. Besides, all that sugar causes you to gain weight, which can be rather depressing, especially when your clothes don’t fit any more. You don’t have to give up chocolate; you just have to be careful not to binge. A piece of chocolate now and then is okay; gulping down a whole chocolate bar at once, is not okay.

Make sure you don’t depend on a bottle of wine for strength to get through the day. Not only does it give you an instant high like sugar, but it gives you a feeling of comfort.  When you can’t go through the day without a drink, then it’s time to take a good look in the mirror and see what you’ve become: an alcoholic.

Yes, take a good look in the mirror and tell that person reflected there that it’s time to develop a pattern of healthy living. It’s not easy but it’s time to break that destructive pattern. Get out. Join a health club and start working out. Go to the movies. Take a class. Learn how to knit. Volunteer at a food bank.

Develop a healthy lifestyle. Go online and look for new, healthier recipes. Eat healthier. Work out. Get out of the house.
