What you need to know about your INSURANCE after Divorce!

Taking control of your life after divorce can be difficult but I hope to share a few tips with you about insurance that may make your transition easier. Here are a few tips on how to regain control of your personal insurance needs.
Tip # 1: If you do not already know, find out what company your auto, home and life insurance coverage is through. Contact these companies to review your current coverages, listed names on policies, deductibles and beneficiaries.
Tip # 2: The most important coverage on your auto insurance policy is your liability coverage. This is the coverage that pays if you have a bad day of driving. After a divorce, your assets may be have changed which means you may need to make adjustments to your current liability coverages. Call your insurance agent to review your coverages. If you do not have an insurance agent, get one!
Tip # 3: Review your current life insurance coverage and needs. Do you have life insurance? Who are the beneficiaries? How much coverage do you have? Is it enough coverage? Contact your insurance agent to complete a life insurance needs analysis. The importance of protecting your family has not changed even though your marital status has.
Tip # 4: If you have minor children, make sure your ex has life insurance to pay for the agreed upon child support in the event of a death. This should be a requirement. Make sure you are the beneficiary of this policy.
Tip # 5: If you own a home, contact your home owner’s insurance company to review your current coverage. Is the deed to the home in your name only now, if so make sure your homeowner’s policy is in your name ONLY. Have your agent complete a replacement cost estimate (how much would it take to re-build your home if you had a total loss of your home) to make sure your home is properly insured. Your home is one of your biggest assets, make sure it is properly insured.
I hope these tips have been helpful to you while you are transitioning through this stage in your life. Please feel free to contact us for quotes or to answer any questions you may have.
